Personal Loans in Virginia: Lender Checks & Cost Examples
Virginia BFI’s Company Search includes consumer-finance licensees, while its guidance assigns certain other categories to NMLS. Choose the correct registry before comparing a lender’s identity and terms. BFI’s consumer assistance is limited to matters within its supervisory jurisdiction.

Which official resources apply in Virginia?
State agency starting point: Virginia State Corporation Commission, Bureau of Financial Institutions (BFI). Use the categories and instructions below to identify the appropriate regulator for the actual lender. This guide does not represent a lender license, endorsement or offer.
Which Virginia institutions does BFI supervise?
BFI describes a range of depository and non-depository institutions, including consumer-finance companies, mortgage businesses and short-term lenders. These are distinct categories. The existence of a financial-services license does not establish that it covers the precise loan or activity offered in your contract.

Company Search or NMLS for a Virginia consumer loan?
Virginia’s Verify a License page places consumer-finance licensees in Company Search. It separately lists NMLS for certain other categories, including mortgage-related entities. Follow that distinction instead of assuming every installment lender must appear in the mortgage search, and ask BFI when a legal company or office is hard to identify.

What is Virginia BFI’s complaint starting point?
BFI encourages consumers to work directly with the financial institution first. Its Banks & Consumer Lenders gateway links to complaint guidance and explains that assistance concerns institutions chartered, licensed or registered within its scope. Save the business’s response and follow the financial-institution route rather than the SCC’s unrelated utility or insurance process.

What should you check before sharing information?
- Use BFI Company Search for the consumer-finance category where applicable.
- Distinguish that record from mortgage-related NMLS licensing.
- Retain your attempted resolution before using BFI’s financial-institution complaint guidance.
Use the official regulator page to reach a lookup or complaint form. A registry check does not guarantee a good loan, and a missing result can require a different category or regulator. Compare the identity in the contract, website address and independently obtained contact details before sending documents.
How much would a $10,000 personal loan cost?
The calculations below are national mathematical scenarios. State residency does not change the formula, and these rates and terms are not represented as available or permitted for every lender or loan in Virginia. At a fee-free fixed 15% rate for 36 months, $10,000 costs about $346.65 monthly and $2,479.52 in total interest.
Illustrative calculations, not offers. Fee-free examples assume a fixed annual interest rate equal to the labelled APR, equal monthly periods, and payments made on time. The APR inputs are scenarios, not available lender rates. Real APR can include fees and may differ from the interest rate used to calculate payments. Actual lender disclosures control.
| Loan amount | Illustrative APR / annual rate | Term | Monthly payment | Total interest | Total repayment |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $10,000.00 | 10% | 36 months | $322.67 | $1,616.19 | $11,616.19 |
| $10,000.00 | 10% | 60 months | $212.47 | $2,748.23 | $12,748.23 |
| $10,000.00 | 15% | 36 months | $346.65 | $2,479.52 | $12,479.52 |
| $10,000.00 | 15% | 60 months | $237.90 | $4,273.96 | $14,273.96 |
| $10,000.00 | 25% | 36 months | $397.60 | $4,313.54 | $14,313.54 |
| $10,000.00 | 25% | 60 months | $293.51 | $7,610.79 | $17,610.79 |
At the same amount and rate, extending the term lowers payment but increases total interest. Read the 36 vs 60 month comparison and original Loan Cost Index; the methodology explains full-precision totals and rounding.
Use the personal loan calculator to compare your own amount, fixed-rate assumption and term. Its result is an estimate, not an offer or eligibility decision.
How should you assess income, credit and repayment?
Do not infer qualification from the payment table or state guide. Review income documentation, current debt payments, credit records, net proceeds after fees and the room left after essentials. A lender determines its own review and any actual terms. DTI is a ratio, not a universal approval threshold; use the DTI calculator, requirements guide, income guide and credit-score guide.
What alternatives and red flags should you consider?
Before borrowing, ask whether a biller can offer a payment arrangement, whether the expense can be delayed, or whether an existing bank or credit union can explain an appropriate option. Compare actual fees and repayment, and avoid replacing unsecured debt with collateral risk without understanding it. Do not send money to obtain a promised guaranteed loan.
The FTC advance-fee loan guidance explains warning signs. Verify provider identity through the state resources above rather than trusting an unsolicited message or an official-looking logo.
Does this guide mean a loan is available in Virginia?
No. This is a consumer education and regulator-navigation resource, not an offer, eligibility determination, license opinion or promise of state coverage. Borrow Your Loan is a connection service, not the lender. A lender’s actual terms and applicable rules govern any transaction.
How was this state guide prepared?
We checked the official agency information linked next to the relevant statements on October 23, 2026. The state-specific material concerns regulator scope, lookup routes and complaint instructions; the reusable payment examples use standard fixed-payment amortization and explicit zero-fee assumptions. We have not turned a single state-law provision into a universal interest-rate or eligibility claim.
Regulatory scope and links can change. Check the agency’s current instructions for your lender and transaction. Use contact to report a source or calculation issue. See editorial policy, how we make money, state guides and the personal-loan hub.
